Today was rough. 33% attendance in the very first lecture, and getting those that attended to engage was like drawing blood from a stone.

@mio i just checked the analytics, 40 students attended, another 40 or so watched the recording. Which leaves another 40 who have not engaged with the first lecture material at all.

Those numbers drop to about half in both categories for lecture number 2.

@mio the move to online learning is a massive disservice to the human race and we will only feel its effects in the decades to come.

@liamoc Online learning might not be the root of the problem. As you mentioned those physically in class are also not engaging

@mio true, i think also there is just a lot more depression, anxiety and general societal malaise. Compare to the energy of the first lecture I ever attended at UNSW back in 2008 (which is on youtube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=hE7l6Adoiiw). Sure, the Richard is a great communicator and I'm not as charismatic as he is but the energy level of the students is starkly different.
